topo ing rame is the second version of Art at BMW Stiftung Herbert Quandt for 2015/16 in collaboration, as an Alumni project, with Chaos Y. Chen, founder and director of WiE Kultur. The title topo ing rame, which means "to meditate in the crowd" in Indonesia Javanese, sets up the key tone of this year's ensemble with artists from Asian and European countries.
The only artist here who does speak Javanese is Yudi Noor, an artist from Indonesia now works in both Berlin and Jakarta. Clemens Krauss catches such moment of being in crowd and passing them by. The British artist Charlotte McGowan-Griffin has travelled to Asia and South America to discover and understand the diversity of papermaking, with which, she could define new forms and depth of space.
While we were preparing this exhibition, good news arrived one after another. Düsseldorf-based artist Manuel Franke has won the competition of the public art in his city. Young photographer from Tallinn, Estonia, Birgit Püve has received prize for her portraiture photography from UK. BMW Group and Guggenheim Museum in New York celebrated that Cao Fei, together with John Baldessari, had been awarded as the BMW Art Car Artist for 2016. Cao Fei participates here with part of her recent work La Town, which has been presented in full scale at Arsenal in Venice Biennial in 2015.
Great thanks to the invitation from BMW Stiftung Herbert Quandt that we could bring in and present the contemporary art so close to think-tanks with stakeholders and decision makers from around the world.
